India and Canada have taken a major step to rebuild relations, signing several agreements including a 10-year nuclear energy deal during talks in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney met to reset ties that had sharply deteriorated in recent years.

The breakthrough comes after tensions flared under former Canadian leader Justin Trudeau, who accused India of links to the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada—an allegation New Delhi strongly denied. The dispute led to diplomatic expulsions and frozen trade discussions.

Now, both sides appear ready to move forward. Modi announced a landmark agreement for long-term uranium supply and cooperation on advanced nuclear technology, including small modular reactors. The leaders also pledged to finalize a long-pending free trade agreement by 2026 and boost cooperation in technology, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, defence, and education.

Carney described the renewed engagement as historic, saying the past year has seen more progress than the previous two decades combined. Analysts say both countries are acting pragmatically, seeking new trade partners amid global tariff pressures and shifting geopolitical alliances.
