Micron Technology declared on Monday that it would construct a second semiconductor factory in Taiwan that would increase its production output to satisfy the growth in demand for artificial intelligence chips worldwide. The new plant will be built on the newly obtained Tongluo location of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
The company mentions that the facility will specialize in the production of advanced DRAM memory, such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is also one of the major elements of AI systems and data centers. Micron has affirmed that it has already purchased the site (P5) of Powerchip in Tongluo, and it will build a new fab plant in the location.
The next plant will be a similar size to the current Micron fabrication plant that is located in Miaoli County. Increasing its footprint in Taiwan in terms of manufacturing will enable the company to enhance the supply of next-generation memory chips, as the world keeps accelerating the demand for AI computing infrastructure.
