India’s active COVID-19 cases cross 4,000

India witnessed a sharp rise in active COVID-19 cases, and the count has risen to 4,026 as per the latest available data of the Union Health Ministry. Highest among these is Kerala with 1,416 active cases, followed by Maharashtra at 494, Gujarat at 397, and Delhi at 393.

Five fresh COVID fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the nation’s death toll for the year to 37. The increase is a far cry from the 257 active cases reported on May 22, The Hindu reports.

The health authorities have guaranteed that all the cases are mostly mild and are treatable at home. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) attributed the recent surge in infections to several Omicron sub-variants—namely LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1. However, they clarified that there has been no evidence to point to heightened severity linked to these variants.

The government is still closely observing as they also recommend to the public that they exercise vigilance and use proper health precautions.
