Ukraine and Russia Make Modest Progress on Humanitarian Issues in Istanbul Peace Talks

Ukraine-Russia talks

Ukraine and Russia achieved limited but tangible progress on humanitarian matters during peace talks held Monday in Istanbul, mediated by Turkey, according to Xinhua.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said Kyiv proposed a 30-day ceasefire, the release of prisoners, and the return of children and young soldiers as part of its humanitarian agenda.

Moscow responded by agreeing to repatriate the remains of 6,000 deceased Ukrainian soldiers in exchange for all severely injured and 18- to 25-year-old Ukrainian troops. Russia also offered a temporary ceasefire in select frontline zones, Xinhua reported.

Officials from both sides described the meeting as constructive. This was the second direct round of talks in Istanbul since May, signaling a cautious but notable step toward sustained dialogue.
