South Koreans Vote in Snap Election After Yoon’s Impeachment; Opposition Leads in Polls

Millions of South Koreans headed to the polls on Tuesday in a high-stakes snap election prompted by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office following a failed attempt to impose martial law in December.

According to the BBC, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung is currently leading in national polls, while Kim Moon-soo, representing the ruling party and a former member of Yoon’s cabinet, is trailing behind.

The election comes at a critical moment for the country, which remains politically divided and faces growing economic uncertainty amid new U.S. tariffs. The next president will also have to navigate an increasingly complex relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump.

Polling stations are scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT), with official results expected within hours, BBC reported.

The outcome is expected to shape South Korea’s domestic stability and international posture for years to come.
