Seine Reopens for Swimmers After a Century

For the first time in more than a century, the Seine River in Paris is officially open for public swimming. Thousands of Parisians and tourists took the plunge this weekend, celebrating the launch of three free-access swimming spots near the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the National Library.

The project followed a €1.4 billion clean-up proposal accelerated by the 2024 Paris Olympics. More than 20,000 homes were connected to the sewerage, and huge rainwater storage tanks were built to prevent pollution during storms.

Changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards are available, and the water is tested daily. A flag system shows if it is safe to swim. Diving is not allowed due to shallow water.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a key supporter, swam before the Olympics to show her confidence in the project. Authorities hope it becomes a top summer attraction and inspires similar projects across Europe.
