Mongolian Premier Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene stepped down on Tuesday after parliament lost faith in him, amid weeks of mounting public protests over economic hardships and graft.
Only 44 lawmakers voted in favor of Oyun-Erdene in the vote, well below the 64 votes needed to keep him in office. After the vote, Oyun-Erdene dismissed all accusations of corruption and blamed powerful political and business groups for orchestrating efforts to destabilize his government, Al Jazeera reported.
Street protests have engulfed the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, in recent weeks, fueled by public outrage over accusations of corruption, rising living costs, and worsening economic conditions.
Although he has resigned, Oyun-Erdene will still be caretaker prime minister for the next 30 days as the country prepares for leadership change, according to Al Jazeera.
