Barcelona took a giant step toward the Champions League semi-finals with a commanding 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their quarter-final clash on Wednesday. Former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski starred against his old team, scoring twice to give the Catalan giants a significant advantage heading into next week’s second leg in Germany, according to Reuters.
Unbeaten since late December and chasing a treble, Barcelona controlled the game from the outset. Their pressure paid off in the 25th minute when Raphinha opened the scoring. Despite a series of impressive saves from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Barca couldn’t extend their lead before halftime.
Barcelona returned with more vigor after the interval. Raphinha turned provider just three minutes into the second half, setting up Lewandowski, who headed in from close range. The Polish forward netted his second goal of the night in the 66th minute, firing in a low drive from just inside the area.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal capped off the dominant performance in the 77th minute, making it 4-0 and all but sealing the tie.
“We played very well, but we’re not thinking about the semi-finals yet. We have to maintain the same focus and mentality that got us here,” Lewandowski told Movistar Plus.
